Kim Rivera is the General Counsel at HP, Inc., where she has implemented important diversity initiatives, including withholding fees from law firms that don’t meet HP’s diversity requirements. During her tenure, HP has had the most diverse board of directors of any tech Fortune 50 company in the United States, has received perfect scores on the Disability Equality Index and Corporate Equality Index, and has been recognized as a top employer for African Americans, Hispanics, and women.  The “Evening With” events profile Latino/a attorneys with a high level of professional achievement and commitment to our community.  Speakers typically speak about their career paths, the obstacles they faced, and offer words of advice to our members.  The events also offer a unique opportunity for our members to socialize with the speakers and with each other.

The tradition continues! The Hispanic Bar Association of Virginia and the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association are   co-sponsoring this year's event. Share in the summer fun with our annual BBQ for members and friends. We will have hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie dogs, and other dishes. Feel free to bring a side dish or dessert to share with fellow members. We will be also have a piñata for the kids!

2017 HBA-DC WARRIOR DASH 

It's back!  Jump in the mud with the HBA-DC Warrior Dash team. Build lasting friendships as you navigate the Warrior Dash obstacle course with the HBA-DC team.

HBA-DC DAY AT THE BALLPARK

The annual HBA-DC Day at the Ballpark is back!  Come join us to watch the Nationals battle the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Tickets are $35.00 each and are located in Section 110.  HBA-DC will host a pregame event at Bullpen/Half Street Fairgrounds.

CALL FOR 2017 EQUAL JUSTICE AWARDS NOMINATIONS

The HBA-DC is seeking nominations for the 2017 Equal Justice Awards.  These prestigious awards recognize individuals and organizations that have exemplified outstanding contributions to the Latino community in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area in the areas of equality, fairness, and social justice and have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to and achievement in public service. The award recipients will be honored during the reception on Friday, November 3, 2017.  The Official Nominations Form is available here

HBA-DC PUBLISHES OPINION PIECE SUPPORTING THE BRIDGE ACT

On May 11, 2017, the Huffington Post published the HBA-DC's opinion editorial calling on Congress to act swiftly to approve the BRIDGE Act. If the bill becomes law, it cements DREAMers' ability to obtain employment authorization and protection from deportation, eliminating the current sense of fear and uncertainty. 

 

FALL EDITION OF HBA-DC QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER IS NOW AVAILABLE

The Fall 2016 edition of HBA-DC's Quarterly Newsletter is now available here.  This edition includes an article titled, "Leading Legal Terms: Lessons on Effective Practices," authored by Yolanda Ruisanchez Gruendel, the founder of Pause for Insight, LLC.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES SIJUS IMMIGRATION TRAINING 

Join Catholic Charities and Crowell & Moring LLP for an SIJS Immigration Only Training on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, from 12:00pm - 1:30pm.  The training will cover representing children in the immigration portion of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status cases.  Lunch and materials will be provided at 1001 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20004. WASHINGTON COUNCIL OF LAWYERS PRESENTS: PERSPECTIVES ON POVERTY LAW FROM THE BENCH

On Friday, June 09, 2017, join  the Washington Council of Lawyers for a brown-bag-lunch panel featuring a trio of D.C. Superior Court judges who will discuss hearing cases in a high-traffic urban courthouse, and the twists and turns in their careers, and how pro bono and public-interest lawyers help to ensure the effective administration of justice.  Our panel consists of Judges Julie Becker, Danya Dayson, and Maribeth Raffinan. The panel will be moderated by Chinh Le, Legal Director of the Legal Aid Society for the District of Columbia.  The event is free. Drinks and desserts will be provided. APABA PRESENTS: HOW TO START WRITING ARTICLES AND GET PUBLISHED

Do you want or need to write an article (or articles), but need help getting started? Or, do you want to develop a personal brand within your office or in the broader community? If so, APABA-DC is hosting an event that is ideal for you. The event will be focused on helping members understand how to develop article topics that help them achieve their personal/professional goals. Other topics of discussion will be writing, revising, and editing articles; identifying a place for publication; and obtaining internal approval for publication.  This event is designed for lawyers who have not written any law-related articles or have written only articles assigned by superiors (and would like to write articles on topics that they select); students who expect to write a note or paper and want to have it published may also benefit from attending.  The George Washington University Law School (Burns Building - Room 505) is hosting the event on June 8, 2017, from 6:30-8:15 p.m.

 

THE EVOLUTION OF LGBTQ IN BIG LAW & CORPORATE AMERICA

In honor of LGBTQ Pride Month, Sidley Austin LLP is hosting a discussion on the evolving experience of life as an LGBTQ lawyer. Barry M. Parsons from Freddie Mac and Justin Beckerfrom Sidley will lead a discussion on the experiences and challenges of being out in the workplace, followed by a cocktail reception.  Barry will share his journey and insights on coming out at work and to clients, address tips on how to succeed at balancing work and life, and discuss potential obstacles that LGBTQ attorneys face.  The event will take place on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at 6:00 p.m.  Registration available here

HNBA LATINA LEADERSHIP ACADEMY 

The HNBA Latina Commission will host the 2017 Latina Leadership Academy (sponsored by Wal-Mart) on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, prior to the start of the 2017 HNBA Annual Convention. There will be morning and afternoon sessions focused on how Latina attorneys’ attitudes and behaviors about their own abilities affect career outcomes, as well as an overview of the key issues Latina attorneys encounter in their careers, including compensation, promotion decisions, and more. To apply, click here. Completed applications must be submitted by Friday, June 9, 2017. The Latina Leadership Academy Selection Committee will review all applications submitted before the application deadline and will select fifty participants to attend the Leadership Academy based on those submissions.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2017 HNBA LATINA COMMISSION'S PRIMERA ABOGADA AWARD  

With the creation of the Latina Commission in 2008, the Commission developed an annual award, now known as the “Primera Abogada” Award, to recognize and honor trailblazing Latina lawyers, affectionately known as Primeras, for their unique and lifetime contributions to the legal profession. This award is given annually to a Latina lawyer trailblazer who, licensed for 30 years or more, has achieved great distinction by opening up opportunities historically closed to Latinas.  The award will be presented during the Latina Commission luncheon held during the HNBA Annual Convention.  Information on how to submit a nomination is available here.  Deadline for Nominations is: July 15, 2017.

JUDICIAL VACANCIES IN DC SUPERIOR 

On May 3, 2017, the District of Columbia Judicial Nomination Commission (JNC) announced that two vacancies on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia will occur as a result of the retirements of the Honorable Zoe Bush and the Honorable Thomas J. Motley, effective October 27, 2017.  The Commission invites qualified individuals to apply for these vacancies by 12:00 pm on Thursday, July 20, 2017. All application materials and correspondence shall be addressed to Katherine L. Garrett, Executive Director, Judicial Nomination Commission, 515 Fifth Street, NW, Suite 235, Washington, DC 20001.  Application materials, including instructions, are available on the Commission’s website.

2017 HNBA LATINA LEADERSHIP ACADEMY NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

The HNBA Latina Commission will host the 2017 Latina Leadership Academy on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, prior to the start of the 2017 HNBA Annual Convention.  The cost of attendance for this program is paid for through the generous support of the Latina Commission’s sponsor, Walmart. WELCOME TO THE HBA-DC JUDICIAL COUNCIL SUMMER INTERNS

The Judicial Council of the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia inaugurated it’s sixth summer internship program this week.  The interns will work with judges sitting on the District of Columbia Superior Court, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Tax Court.  Welcome to the District of Columbia and the HBA-DC family! 

DC BAR LAWYER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM IS AVAILABLE TO LAW STUDENTS

The Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP) is a free, confidential service for D.C. Bar members, judges, and law students who are experiencing problems which interfere with their personal or professional lives. LAP offers both individual (free, confidential) services (assessment, referral, counseling, & consultation) as well as (free) individualized presentations and materials for groups.  More information is available here.
