President's Message

Dear @@first_name@@,

A short update on a lawsuit that I shared a couple months ago.  The District will now allow U.S. citizen children of non-resident immigrants to apply for the city's tuition assistance program. The District changed its policy as part of a settlement with Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), which filed suit on behalf of Natalia Villalobos, an aspiring college student. Two years ago, Natalia applied for the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant, a grant that provides residents with up to $10,000 in grants for college. Even though Natalia had the grades and test scores to qualify for the program, her application was denied because her mother was born in El Salvador.

Without the aid, Natalia was effectively shutout of college. MALDEF sued the District on Natalia's behalf to help her and others who are similarly situated to gain access to the tuition assistance program.  With the change in policy, all U.S. citizen children who are residents of the District may now apply for tuition assistance, without regard of where their parents were born.

Atentamente,

Ben Hernandez-Stern

President
Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia
