Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Perez to Keynote Annual Equal Justice Awards

(Washington, DC – October 21, 2011) – Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice Thomas E. Perez will deliver keynote remarks at the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia (HBA-DC) 34th Annual Equal Justice Awards Reception on Thursday, November 10, 2011, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Mr. Perez has spent his entire career in public service and has prosecuted and supervised the prosecution of some of the Department's most high profile civil rights cases. He has served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Special Counsel to the late Senator Edward Kennedy, Director of the Office of Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.
Over 250 of the most influential Hispanic attorneys and policy makers from the Washington Metropolitan area are expected to attend the event. The event will feature the presentation of HBA-DC's Equal Justice Awards. The 2011 Judge Ricardo M. Urbina Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to D.C. Superior Court Judge Hiram Puig-Lugo. The 2011 Hugh A. Johnson, Jr., Memorial Awards will be presented to Rosanne Avilés, Supervising Attorney at the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia and to Liberty's Promise, a non-profit organization that supports young, D.C. area immigrants in need while encouraging them to be active and conscientious citizens. The 2011 Rising Star Award will be presented to M. Lucero Ortiz, Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff, at the U.S. Department of Labor. These prestigious awards recognize individuals and an organization that have made outstanding contributions to the Hispanic community in the areas of equality, fairness and social justice and who have an unwavering commitment and achievement in public service.
A cocktail buffet reception starts at 6:30 pm, with the awards ceremony at 8:00 and a dessert reception and dancing featuring the band Sol y Rumba, starting at 9:00.
