HBA-DC PRESIDENT, MARLON PAZ, TO RECEIVE HNBF LEADERSHIP AWARD
It is with great pride and joy that we congratulate our friend and President of the Hispanic Bar Association of D.C., Marlon Q. Paz, on his receipt of the Hispanic National Bar Foundation Leadership Award. The award recognizes the contributions of Latino leaders in the legal community. Mr. Paz will be one of three honorees receiving the award at the Hispanic National Bar Foundation Awards Dinner on Thursday, July 9, 2009.
HBA-DC CONGRATULATES NEWLY ELECTED DC BAR OFFICERS AND BOARD MEMBERS
It is with utmost pride and pleasure that HBA-DC congratulates Ronald S. Flagg and HBA-DC Treasurer, Javier Salinas, on their election as President-Elect and Board of Governors Member of the DC Bar, respectively. The HBA-DC endorsed both candidates.
HBA-DC also congratulates all the newly elected officers and board members of the DC bar.

HBA-DC CONGRATULATES BRIGIDA BENITEZ ON HER SELECTION TO THE STEERING COMMITTEE OF COURTS, LAWYERS AND THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE SECTION It is with great pride and joy that we congratulate our friend and current Director of the Hispanic Bar Association, Brigida Benitez, on her selection to the DC Bar's Courts, Lawyers and the Administration of Justice Section Steering Committee. Ms. Benitez, a long time leader in the legal community, was chosen to serve a three-year term as a member of the Section Steering Committee.

HBA-DC PAST PRESIDENT, JOHN TRASVIñA, TO BE OBAMA'S NOMINEE FOR ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR FAIR HOUSING AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY AT HUD
President Obama will nominate longtime friend and past president of HBA-DC, John Trasviña, for the position of Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Mr. Trasviña has served as Chairman Paul Simon’s General Counsel & Staff Director for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs, as Special Counsel for Immigration Related Unfair Employment Practices (the highest ranking Latino attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice at the time), and as President & General Counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund (MALDEF). Mr. Trasviña has also served as a board member of the La Raza Lawyers Association and currently serves on the boards of the Latino Issues Forum and Campaign for College Opportunity. In addition, he recently served as Chair of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda. Congratulations Mr. Trasviña!
BOTH HBA-DC ENDORSED CANDIDATES TO BE NOMINATED TO DC SUPERIOR COURT
HBA-DC extends heartfelt congratulations to Judge Marisa J. Demeo and Florence Y. Pan. On March 24, 2009, President Obama announced his intent to nominate Judge Demeo and Ms. Pan as Associate Judges on the District of Columbia Superior Court. HBA-DC endorsed both candidates and sent letters to the White House on their behalf. The endorsement letters are available here.
"We are thrilled that the President has nominated these two extremely well-qualified individuals to serve on the D.C. Superior Court," said HBA-DC President Marlon Paz. "We are proud that the Hispanic Bar of D.C. endorsed both Marisa Demeo and Florence Pan for these vacancies. Their appointments will add significant diversity to the D.C. Superior Court."
Marisa Demeo was appointed as a Magistrate Judge in the D.C. Superior Court in 2007, a position for which she was also endorsed by HBA-DC. Judge Demeo is a longtime friend of HBA-DC and we are proud that she has been actively involved with our Association. Congratulations Judge Demeo and Ms. Pan!
THE HONORABLE VANESSA RUIZ RECEIVES ABA COMMISSION ON WOMEN IN THE PROFESSION 2009 MARGARET BRENT WOMEN LAWYERS OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
It is with utmost pride and pleasure that HBA-DC congratulates the Honorable Vanessa Ruiz for receiving this prestigious honor. The ABA Women Lawyers of Achievement Award honors outstanding women lawyers who have achieved professional excellence in their area of specialty and have actively paved the way to success for others. The award is named for Margaret Brent, the first woman lawyer in America.
In December 2008, HBA-DC sent a letter to the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession recommending Judge Ruiz for this award based on her keen intellect, distinguished professional record, commitment to equal justice, sound judgment, temperament and proven integrity that characterize our country's best jurists. The award ceremony luncheon will take place Sunday, Aug. 2 at the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago during the ABA Annual Meeting.

KENIA SEAONE LOPEZ WINS DC COURTS' "CORO" AWARD
Kenia Seaone, HBA-DC Vice-President for Internal Affairs, was awarded the Legal Community "CORO" Award by the District of Columbia Courts, for her outstanding service to the Latino community. Congratulations, Kenia! Kenia is an Assistant Attorney General in the DC Office of the Attorney General. The awards ceremony will be held on October 24, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the Jurors Lounge on the third floor of the Moultrie Courthouse.
MARLON PAZ AND JESSICA HERRERA-FLANIGAN NAMED AMONG "100 MOST INFLUENTIAL U.S. HISPANICS"
HBA-DC President-Elect Marlon Paz and Past President Jessica Herrera-Flanigan have been recognized by Hispanic Business Magazine as among the 100 Most Influential Hispanics in the country. Congratulations to both! Marlon is Senior Counsel to the Director of Trading and Markets at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law School. Jessica is a Partner at Monument Policy Group and President of Region V of the Hispanic National Bar Association. RECEPTION HONORING NEWLY APPOINTED SEC COMMISSIONERS
On September 11, 2008, HBA-DC held a reception honoring Luis A. Aguilar and Troy A. Paredes, newly appointed Commissioners at the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission. The event featured remarks by, Roel C. Campos, former Commissioner at the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission. The reception took place at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP. HBA-DC would like to thank Cooley Godward for its generous support.
