"HOW TO GET A POSITION ON CAPITOL HILL" EVENT A SUCCESS
August 26, 2010: The event was co-sponsored by the Congressional Hispanic Staffers Associaiton (CHSA). The panel educated the audience on the most effective way to conduct a search for a job on the Hill.



HBA-DC PAST PRESIDENT MARI CARMEN APONTE APPOINTED CHIEF OF MISSION IN EL SALVADOR
August 19, 2010: President Obama announced his intent to recess appoint Ms. Aponte Chief of Mission to the Republic of El Salvador. HBA-DC congratulates Ms. Aponte and commends the recess appointment of this superbly qualified individual who has been awaiting Senate confirmation since December 9, 2009. Ms. Aponte is currently an attorney and independent consultant with Aponte Consulting and serves on the Board of Directors of Oriental Financial Group. From 2001-2004, Ms. Aponte was the Executive Director of the Puerto Rican Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA). Prior to that, she practiced law for nearly twenty years with Washington D.C. based law firms. Ms. Aponte also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Council of La Raza, the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, and the University of the District of Columbia. She is also a member of the Board of Rosemont College. She served as president of the Hispanic National Bar Association; the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia; and as a member of the District of Columbia Judicial Nominations Commission. In 1979, as a White House Fellow, Ms. Aponte was Special Assistant to United States Housing and Urban Development Secretary Moon Landrieu. Ms. Aponte has a B.A. in Political Science from Rosemont College, an M.A. in Theatre from Villanova University, and a J.D. from Temple University.
STANDING ROOM ONLY AT "HOW TO GET A POSITION AS A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ATTORNEY"
August 11, 2010: The panel educated audience members on how to approach their search for a federal attorney position. The event was co-sponsored by the Diversity Committee of the Federal Communications Bar Association. HBA-DC thanks Hunton & Williams for hosting.


HBA-DC HOSTS LA FAMILIA BBQ
July 31, 2010: HBA-DC held its annual La Familia BBQ at the Virginia Highlands Park in Arlington, VA. The BBQ was a success with over 50 members, family, and friends attending and enjoying a warm day with hot dogs, veggie burgers, arroz con pollo, arroz con gandules, and other delicious dishes. The kids had plenty of fun with the annual pinata, too!



HBA-DC NETWORKING SERIES HAPPY HOUR RAISES FUNDS FOR THE LATINO STUDENT FUND
July 29, 2010: HBA-DC members enjoyed themselves in the third of a series of Happy Hour networking socials designed to showcase the city's non-profit legal service providers that work with the Hispanic community. On May July 29, HBA-DC featured the Latino Student Fund, which has been providing opportunities for a strong academic foundation for students of Hispanic descent in grades PreK-12 to promote higher education and professional leadership since 1994.

HBA-DC BOARD MEMBERS ATTEND INVESTITURE OF JUDGE MARISA DEMEO
July 23, 2010: HBA-DC Board Members attended the investiture of Judge Marisa Demeo, who was sworn in by U.S. District Court Judge Ricardo Urbina. Judge Demeo was confirmed by the Senate on April 20, 2010.

July 21, 2010: Mr. Mottley's first speech as President-elect inspired and motivated summer clerks, interns and associates working in Washington, DC. HBA-DC thanks Crowell & Moring for their generous support.
HBA-DC CALL FOR NOMINATIONS - 2010 Equal Justice Awards
July 14, 2010: The Hispanic Bar Association of DC is seeking nominations for the Hugh A. Johnson, Jr. Memorial Awards (both individuals and organizations), the Judge Ricardo M. Urbina Lifetime Achievement Award (individuals), and the Rising Star Award (individuals). These prestigious awards recognize individuals and organizations who have exemplified outstanding contributions to the Latino community of Greater Washington, DC in the areas of equality, fairness and social justice and who have unwavering commitment and achievement in public service. The selected awards recipients will be honored at the 2010 Annual Equal Justice Awards Gala on November 4, 2010.

June 8, 2010: Standing room only at Trade in the Americas panel; World Cup Kick-off Celebration raises over $2,000 for Haiti United, which delivers gear, equipment and soccer uniforms to Haiti to help provide quality recreation opportunities for youth displaced by January's earthquake.

NETWORKING SERIES HAPPY HOUR FEATURING AYUDA RAISES OVER $600
May 27, 2010: HBA-DC members enjoyed themselves in the second of a series of Happy Hour networking socials designed to showcase the city's non-profit legal service providers that work with the Hispanic community. On May 27, HBA-DC featured Ayuda, a legal service provider that has been serving the Hispanic community for over thirty years. HBA-DC and Ayuda held various raffles throughout the evening at Current Lounge in Dupont Circle. The event was co-sponsored with the D.C. chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and succeeded in raising over $600 for Ayuda through contributions at the door and in raising awareness of Ayuda's activities.

HBA-DC SENDS LETTER TO DC COUNCIL JUDICIARY COMMITTEE CHAIR MENDELSON OPPOSING ACCESS TO JUSTICE BUDGET CUTS
May 5, 2010: The Access to Justice Program provides legal services for low-income D.C. residents, a community legal interpreter bank, and a loan repayment assistance program for lawyers serving people living in poverty. Mayor Adrian Fenty's proposed 37% cut from $2.86 million in FY2010 to $1.8 million in FY2011 poses the threat of far-reaching negative effects for the legal services community and the low income individuals served. The Womens' Bar Association of DC, APABA-DC, and SABA-DC signed on to the letter.

May 5, 2010: In conjunction with other Hispanic professional organizations, HBA-DC members celebrated Cinco de Mayo to the traditional sounds of Mariachi musicians.

HBA-DC CO-SPONSORS DC BAR CANDIDATES FORUM
April 29, 2010: DC Bar Candidates' forum, sponsored by several voluntary bar associations, including HBA-DC. HBA-DC members met and spoke with DC Bar candidates at Annie's Steakhouse.

APRIL 20, 2010: MAGISTRATE JUDGE MARISA DEMEO CONFIRMED BY SENATE AS ASSOCIATE JUDGE ON THE SUPERIOR COURT OF DC! Congratulations, Judge Demeo!
NETWORKING EVENT FEATURING CAIR COALITION RAISES OVER $450
April 15, 2010: HBA-DC sponsored a netoworking event at Cafe Citron in Dupont Circle. HBA-DC members, including mentors and mentees, attended the event featuring the CAIR Coalition. Donations of over $450 were collected to benefit CAIR, which works on the legal rights of area immigrants.
