HISPANIC BAR ASSOCIATION COMMENDS PRESIDENT OBAMA FOR
NOMINATING JUDGE SONIA SOTOMAYOR
TO THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES

Federal Appellate Judge has unique, extensive experience

The Hispanic Bar Association of D.C., the professional association of Hispanic lawyers in the Nation's Capital, commends President Obama for nominating Judge Sonia Sotomayor to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. Judge Sotomayor currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and has 17 years of experience on the federal bench. She is an exceptionally accomplished jurist and has extensive prosecutorial and trial court experience. Judge Sotomayor has been recognized as one of the ablest federal judges currently sitting for her thoughtful opinions, and as a role model of intellectual prowess, integrity and commitment to equal justice. She has demonstrated great devotion to public service and to the rule of law.

"President Obama's nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court is a proud moment for our country, the legal profession, and for the Hispanic community," stated Hispanic Bar Association of D.C. President Marlon Paz. "Judge Sotomayor adds great depth and breadth of experience to the Supreme Court - indeed, more federal judicial experience than any Supreme Court Justice in nearly a century."

Judge Sotomayor has a track record of bipartisan support. She was nominated as a federal district court judge by a Republican President and confirmed by a Democratic-controlled Senate. Judge Sotomayor was elevated to the federal court of appeals by a Democratic President and confirmed by a Republican-controlled Senate.

This Hispanic Bar Association of D.C.'s Supreme Court Committee has been working closely with Hispanics for a Fair Judiciary, a coalition of national Latino groups, to champion talented Hispanic lawyers. We thank President Obama for the historic nomination of such an exceptional individual to the Supreme Court and we congratulate Judge Sotomayor on her nomination.
