HBA-DC Announces 2015 Equal Justice Awards Recipients

The Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia (HBA-DC) will hold its annual Equal Justice Awards Reception on Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, DC. Over three hundred of the most influential attorneys and policymakers from the Washington Metropolitan area are expected to attend the event. The HBA-DC is pleased to announce that the following individuals and organizations will be honored at the Equal Justice Awards Reception:

Judge Ricardo M. Urbina Lifetime Achievement Award. The award recognizes a member of the DC legal profession, with 15+ years of principled service in the legal profession or a related field, and outstanding contributions to the Hispanic community in the areas of equality, fairness, and social justice.

Recipient: Alfred Baltazar Baca, former Senior Trial Attorney, U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division.

Hugh A. Johnson, Jr. Memorial Award (2 Awards—organization and individual). The award recognizes a community organization and an individual with visible ties to the DC Metropolitan area, especially its Hispanic community, for their demonstrated commitment to public service and dedication to the principles of equality, cultural respect, and social justice.

Recipient (Individual): Mónica Palacio, Director, District of Columbia Office of Human Rights.

Recipient (Organization): Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington.

Rising Star Award. The award recognizes an active member of the legal profession in the region with 10 years of experience or less, for his or her principled legal service and outstanding contributions to the legal profession.

Recipient: Marina A. Torres, Counselor to the Director, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
