HBA-DC Announces 2016 Equal Justice Awards Recipients

On August 5, 2016, the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia (HBA-DC) issued a press release announcing the following individuals and organizations will be honored at the Equal Justice Awards Reception on Friday, November 4, 2016, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C.:

Judge Ricardo M. Urbina Lifetime Achievement Award:
This award recognizes a member of the D.C. legal profession, with 15+ years of principled service in the legal profession or a related field and outstanding contributions to the Hispanic community in the areas of equality, fairness, and social justice.

Recipient: María E. Holleran Rivera, former Foreign Affairs Specialist, National Nuclear Security Administration, United States Department of Energy


Hugh A. Johnson, Jr. Memorial Awards
(2 Awards – organization and individual): These awards recognize a community organization and an individual with visible ties to the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area, especially its Hispanic community, that demonstrate unwavering commitment and achievement to public service and dedication to the principles of equality, cultural respect, and social justice.

Recipient (organization): Tahirih Justice Center
Recipient (individual): James J. Sandman, President, Legal Services Corporation


Rising Star Award:
This award recognizes an active member of the legal profession in the region with 10 years of experience or less, for his or her principled legal service and outstanding contributions to the legal profession.

Recipient: Roman Martinez, Assistant to the Solicitor General, Office of the Solicitor General, United States Department of Justice
