The Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia (HBA-DC) is pleased to announce that D.C. Attorney General Karl A. Racine will provide the keynote address at the 2017 Equal Justice Awards. General Racine is the first elected Attorney General of the District of Columbia and strong supporter of the HBA-DC. With his inauguration in 2014, General Racine ushered in a new era of independence for the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) and renewed focus on data-driven juvenile justice reform; consumer protection efforts—aimed at assisting the District’s most vulnerable residents; measures to advance democracy and safeguard public integrity; and legal actions to protect affordable housing in communities across the District.

Under General Racine’s leadership, the OAG has paid particular attention to critical issues that face the Latino community. Most notably, the OAG has aggressively prosecuted notary fraudsters who prey on the Latino community by posing as attorneys or misrepresenting that they can offer legal services. With the support of the HBA-DC through the Council for Court Excellence’s Notario Fraud Identification and Enforcement Working Group, General Racine pushed through legislation that strengthened protections for immigrants from notario fraud and recently signed a letter with 19 other states urging that President Trump maintain and defend DACA.

“We are honored to host Attorney General Karl A. Racine, who is truly a strong advocate for the Latino community and a friend to all District residents,” stated HBA-DC President Ben Hernandez-Stern. HBA-DC will hold its annual Equal Justice Awards (EJA) at the Park Hyatt Washington, with the reception beginning at 6:30 pm, the awards program set for 8:00 pm, and a dessert reception at 9:00 pm.
