HBA-DC Co-Sponsors Panel on The Impact of Secure Communities Program and The DREAM Act

On November 7, the HBA-DC and student organizations from Howard University School of Law (La Alianza, the Muslim Law Student Association and Asian Pacific Law Student Association), co-sponsored a panel discussion on the impact of the Secure Communities Program and recent developments regarding the Dream Act. The panel highlighted the disparate impact of the Secure Communities Program, the lack of uniform guidelines in its application, as well as efforts underway to declare the program unconstitutional. The panel also discussed lobbying efforts to support the Dream Act in Maryland.


Over 40 people attended the event held at Howard University School of Law. Mariela Olivares– Assistant Professor of Law at Howard University- moderated the panel which included: Zorayda Moreira-Smith, Staff Attorney at CASA de Maryland; Ajmel Quereshi, Adjunct Professor of Law at Howard University and Aadika Singh, policy associate for the Rights Working Group..
