Nelly Montenegro


Nelly Montenegro, an Attorney Negotiator, joined the Domestic Violence Unit for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia in August 2016. In that capacity, she negotiates contested Civil Protection Order cases involving complex custody, visitation, housing, financial, and property division issues. Before joining the Court, she was a National Training & Technical Assistance Attorney for the American Bar Association’s Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence, where she specialized in developing curricula for training domestic violence, sexual assault, and family law attorneys. Ms. Montenegro was also the Supervising Attorney of Ayuda’s Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program, which provides comprehensive legal and social services to immigrant survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. 


She has a JD from the University of Illinois College of Law and a BA in Political Science and Sociology, with a minor in Latino/a Studies, from the University of Illinois.  Nelly was born in Guatemala, immigrated to Chicago, Illinois at age five, and is extremely proud of her immigrant experience.
