WELCOME TO THE 2018 ANNUAL EQUAL JUSTICE AWARDS!

 

The Equal Justice Awards Reception is HBA-DC’s annual gala where we recognize individuals and organizations that have made extraordinary contributions to achieving equal justice in the District of Columbia. 

 

Net proceeds from the event allow the HBA-DC to continue serving its members through professional development events, mentoring programs, judicial and other endorsements, job referrals, policy advocacy, and supporting the community through legal clinics, education and many other activities.

2018 Equal Justice Awardees!

 

The HBA-DC is pleased to announce that the following individuals and organizations will be honored at the Equal Justice Awards Reception on November 9, 2018:

 

Judge Ricardo M. Urbina Lifetime Achievement Award:

  • Poli Marmolejos, Director and Chief Administrative Judge of the Department of Energy's Office of Hearings and Appeals and former President of HBA-DC. This award recognizes a member of the Washington, DC legal profession, with 15+ years of principled service in the legal profession or a related field, and outstanding contributions to the Hispanic community in the areas of equality, fairness, and social justice.

Hugh A. Johnson, Jr. Memorial Awards (2 Awards - organization and individual):

  • The Abramson Scholarship Foundation (organization) and Sulma Arias, Campaign Director for Fair Immigration Reform Movement, Center for Community Change (individual). These awards recognize a community organization and an individual with visible ties to the Washington, DC Metropolitan area, especially its Hispanic community, that demonstrate unwavering commitment and achievement to public service and dedication to the principles of equality, cultural respect, and social justice.

Rising Star Award:

  • Wandaly Fernandez, Associate, Sidley Austin LLP & Catherine Cone, Counsel, Washington Lawyer's Committee. This award recognizes two active members of the legal profession with 10 years or less experience for principled service and outstanding contributions to the legal profession.   

 

 

Keynote Speaker

  • Mónica Ramírez is a long-time advocate, organizer, social entrepreneur and attorney fighting to eliminate gender-based violence and secure gender equity. For over two decades, she has fought for the civil and human rights of women, children, workers, Latinos/as and immigrants. In 2003, Mónica created the first legal project in the United States dedicated to addressing gender discrimination against farmworker women, which she scaled to create Esperanza: The Immigrant Women’s Legal Initiative of the Southern Poverty Law Center. She has founded and co-founded several other major initiatives, including Justice for Migrant Women, the Latina Impact Fund, ReflectUS and Alianza Nacional de Campesinas.
