Past Presidents: Ben Hernandez-Stern (2017)

 


 

Ben Hernandez-Stern is Counsel for the U.S. House Committee of the Judiciary, Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security, where he advises members of Congress on criminal justice matters.


Before joining the Judiciary Committee majority staff, Ben served as an Attorney Advisor in the Office for Civil Rights, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice. There, he focused on enforcement actions that arise from complaints alleging discrimination based on sex, race, color, national origin, and disability. At the Department of Justice, Ben settled high profile civil rights complaints that involved the administration of pre-trial bail and levying of fees and fines. Ben also completed detail assignments as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office in the District of Columbia and as Special Counsel at the Office for Access to Justice, U.S. Department of Justice.


From 2009 to 2014, Ben worked at the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where he enforced various civil rights laws, drafted regulations associated with the Affordable Care Act, and served as the Director of the Academy for Civil Rights Investigators. Following law school, Ben clerked for the Honorable Harry Pregerson, United States Circuit Judge for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and then worked as an litigation associate in the Washington, D.C. office of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver and Jacobson.


Ben serves as a Major in the United States Air Force Reserve. As a Staff Judge Advocate, he 
regularly gives legal advice to Air Force personnel on military justice matters, personnel issues, operational law, and administrative claims. In 2011, Ben was forward deployed from the Criminal Investigation Task Force to Joint Task Force- Iraq, where he served as the Chief of Prosecution, and was awarded the Bronze Star.

 

Ben received his law degree from Stanford University, a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College, and a bachelor’s degree from Brown University.
